The Land of the Strays could be the title of a low-budget horror movie, but the reality could not be further from the truth. Otherwise known as Territorio de Zaguates, The Land of the Strays is in fact a paradise, at least for dogs and dog-lovers.
It’s a privately funded, volunteer-run, no-kill animal shelter in Costa Rica. So far, so conventional. What makes this shelter unique however is it’s message. Territorio de Zaguates, whose advertising campaign carries the message “when you adopt a mutt, you adopt a unique breed”, wants people to think differently about mix-breed dogs.
Mongrels are often deemed inferior to pure breeds, but the shelter believes that championing their mixed status is the key to helping them find homes. Each dog for example is given its own unique breed, so instead of being nondescript mutts, the animals become exotically-named rarities. Ever wanted an Alaskan Collie Fluffyterrier? How about a Fire-Tailed Border Cocker or a Chubby-Tailed German Dobernauzer? If so then you know where to go! Continue reading
Meet Luca, the Alaskan Malamute that loves to destroy her toys! Karissa Lerch, from Durham in North Carolina, always wanted a dog, but couldn’t afford one while in college. “I passed the stuffed animal down to her and she has kept it by her side at all times ever since,” said Lerch online. “It’s her baby 🙂 She carries it around everywhere and always has it with her when she goes to bed.” Continue reading
I wouldn’t have believed that an owl and a dog could become best friends until I saw these surprising and adorable photos by Tanja Brandt, a professional animal photographer and collage artist in Germany. Ingo the shepherd dog and Poldi the little owl seem more than happy to cozy up to each other for photoshoots bathed in golden evening light.
If you like these photos, be sure to visit Brandt’s site, because Ingo has a whole lot of beautiful friends, be they other shepherds or other fierce birds of prey besides Poldi. Brandt creates animal photos and collages professionally, so she seems to have a lot of cooperative models to work with!
Though these photos certainly are adorable and unique, Ingo and Poldi aren’t the only unusual animal friends out there! Continue reading
